In pre-earthquake spaces, it fragments through dense, ornamented interiors; in the Pombaline city, it glides with precision across symmetrical façades and aligned streets; in 20th-century modernism, it sharpens into geometry; and in contemporary architecture, it reflects, dissolves and multiplies across surfaces designed to amplify it.

Each image captures this dialogue between light and matter, revealing successive layers of the city, from pre-1755 Lisbon, through Pombaline rationalism and 20th-century modernity, to its most current architectural expressions.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”35px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”11518″ img_size=”full” css=””][vc_custom_heading text=”Houses in Lisbon ©Aleksandr Zaitsev” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:12|text_align:left|color:%232A2A2A” google_fonts=”font_family:Fira%20Sans%3A300%2C300italic%2C400%2C400italic%2C500%2C500italic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:300%20light%20regular%3A300%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1790846594171{margin-top: 5px !important;}”][vc_empty_space height=”10px”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”11522″ img_size=”full” css=””][vc_custom_heading text=”Modern architecture ©Aleksandr Zaitsev” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:12|text_align:left|color:%232A2A2A” google_fonts=”font_family:Fira%20Sans%3A300%2C300italic%2C400%2C400italic%2C500%2C500italic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:300%20light%20regular%3A300%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1790846613336{margin-top: 5px !important;}”][vc_empty_space height=”35px”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”11520″ img_size=”full” css=””][vc_custom_heading text=”Pombaline architecture ©Aleksandr Zaitsev” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:12|text_align:left|color:%232A2A2A” google_fonts=”font_family:Fira%20Sans%3A300%2C300italic%2C400%2C400italic%2C500%2C500italic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:300%20light%20regular%3A300%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1790846628122{margin-top: 5px !important;}”][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][vc_custom_heading text=”Before 1755, Lisbon was dense, irregular and deeply medieval.” font_container=”tag:h4|font_size:26|text_align:left|line_height:1.5″ google_fonts=”font_family:Playfair%20Display%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:400%20italic%3A400%3Aitalic” css=””][vc_empty_space height=”5px”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text css=””]

Before the earthquake: an organic and sacred city

Before 1755, Lisbon was dense, irregular and deeply medieval, an organic fabric shaped by topography, trade and religion.

The Jerónimos Monastery stands as a powerful example of this symbolic and ornamental city. Here, detail is everything: carved stone ropes, maritime motifs, an architecture that celebrates empire through excess. To photograph it is not to capture the whole, but to isolate fragments, almost as independent drawings.

The National Pantheon, begun in the 16th century and only completed in the 20th, is a lesson in architectural time. Its interior, clad in coloured Portuguese marble, creates geometric compositions that shift with light, giving rise to the portuguese expression “works of Santa Engrácia,” synonymous with endless construction.

At the Estrela Basilica, built between 1779 and 1789, a moment of transition becomes evident.
